Is There Evidence That God Exists?

This article is a written summary of a faith-centered message about evidence for God, personal revelation, miracles, the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and gaining a personal testimony. Drawing on his former career as a criminal defense attorney, his missionary experiences in Japan, and his own search for spiritual certainty, the speaker explains why he believes faith is not simply belief without evidence. His message is that there are many witnesses of God, but ultimately every person is invited to seek a witness for themselves through the Holy Ghost.

TL;DR: Is There Evidence That God Lives?

The central message of the video is that there is evidence that God lives, and that evidence includes both historical witnesses and personal spiritual experience. The speaker points to biblical witnesses, Joseph Smith, the Three Witnesses and Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, modern prophets and apostles, and countless ordinary believers who testify of miracles and answers to prayer. He then adds his own experiences: miraculous direction as a missionary in Japan, powerful impressions of Christ’s love for people who had committed serious sins, and a personal answer to prayer confirming that God lives and the scriptures are true. His invitation is simple: do not rely forever on someone else’s testimony. Ask God sincerely and seek your own witness.

Faith and Evidence: What a Criminal Defense Attorney Learned About Witnesses

The speaker begins by sharing his background as a criminal defense attorney. Over approximately 11 years, he represented nearly 2,000 people accused of crimes.

One case became an important illustration for how he thinks about evidence.

A young man was accused of robbing a car salesman and stealing a vehicle. The client insisted he was innocent.

After investigating, the attorney discovered that at the time of the robbery, his client had actually been in another state participating in a flag football tournament.

He interviewed coaches, players, teammates, and spectators and compiled a list of approximately 15 reliable witnesses who all placed the client somewhere else at the time of the offense.

When he presented this evidence to the detective and asked for the charges to be dismissed, the detective initially responded that there was no evidence.

But there was evidence.

There were witnesses.

And shortly afterward, the charges were gone.

The speaker uses that experience to introduce the main question of the video:

What if people dismiss evidence for God in the same way?

Are There Witnesses That God Lives?

The speaker says he sometimes hears people argue that there is no evidence that God exists and that religion is purely a matter of faith.

His response is that there is a long list of witnesses who have testified of God and Jesus Christ.

He points to:

  • Saul, or Paul, who testified of seeing the resurrected Christ.
  • Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
  • Peter, James, and Jude.
  • Joseph Smith and his testimony of seeing God the Father and Jesus Christ.
  • The Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon.
  • The Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon.
  • Prophets and apostles who have testified of Jesus Christ.
  • Ordinary believers who testify of miracles, revelation, and answered prayer.

His point is not that every listener must immediately accept every testimony without question.

His point is that these witnesses should not simply be dismissed as though no evidence exists.

What Does It Mean to Be a Witness of God?

The speaker then turns the idea of witnesses toward himself.

At baptism, he says he covenanted to stand as a witness of God at all times, in all things, and in all places.

He therefore publicly declares that he believes:

  • God lives.
  • Jesus Christ is his personal Savior.
  • The scriptures are true.

But because of his legal background, he wants to do more than simply state belief.

As an attorney, he spent years cross-examining witnesses.

Witnesses are supposed to testify about what they saw, heard, and experienced.

So the rest of the message becomes his attempt to explain what he personally witnessed that led him to believe in God.

Miracles in Japan: How God Helped Missionaries Find Lost Members

One of the longest sections of the video comes from the speaker’s missionary service in the Fukuoka Japan Mission.

While serving in Kumamoto, he and his companion were assigned to help clean up the ward membership directory.

The records included roughly 540 names, but many addresses and phone numbers were incomplete or outdated.

Some members could not be located at all.

The missionaries worked through the list one person at a time.

After approximately three months, they had updated or found nearly everyone.

Only about 15 names remained.

At that point, the speaker was ready to move on to other missionary work.

Then something happened that he describes as miraculous.

A Voice Told Him to Go to Ozu

One morning, the speaker says he heard a clear voice tell him to go to the city of Ozu, enter the city hall building, and ask for a specific man whose name was still on the list of missing members.

He immediately recognized the name.

He and his companion changed their plans, bought train tickets, and traveled to Ozu.

When they arrived, they did not know where the man lived, did not have his phone number, and did not know which office to visit.

Inside the building, the speaker felt an impression to try a particular door on the second floor.

He entered an office and explained that he was looking for a friend.

The woman behind the counter asked for an address.

He did not have one.

She asked for a phone number.

He did not have that either.

When he finally gave the man’s name, she simply turned around and called to a nearby cubicle.

The very man they were looking for stood up.

A Church Member Who Had Been Missing for 20 Years

The man explained that he had been baptized as a teenager but had lost contact with the Church after leaving for college.

According to the speaker, he had not seen another member of the Church in approximately 20 years.

The missionaries updated his information.

He agreed to meet with the bishop and reconnect with members.

The speaker describes the experience simply:

After 20 years, he was no longer lost.

For the speaker, this was not just an unlikely coincidence.

It was a miracle.

A Broken Bicycle and Another Answer to Prayer

Shortly afterward, the missionaries tried to find two more people on the list.

These members lived in a distant part of the ward boundaries, but the missionaries had no useful phone numbers or addresses.

They decided to ride their bicycles approximately 27 miles over the mountains to the city where the two people supposedly lived.

Along the way, near Mount Aso, the speaker’s companion’s bicycle chain broke.

The missionaries were stranded.

They pushed their bicycles to an area where they knew members lived and asked one family for help.

That attempt failed.

Discouraged, the speaker knelt on the side of the road and prayed.

He told God that if He wanted them to find these people, they needed a bicycle.

He asked where they could find one.

The speaker says the Spirit told him:

“Go to the city hall building and ask for a bicycle.”

The Unexpected Bicycle

When he opened his eyes, a city hall building was nearby.

He entered and asked for a bicycle.

The request confused the person working there.

Then an older farmer walking through the lobby overheard him.

The farmer said he had a bicycle they could have.

He took them across the road, opened his garage, and gave them a working bicycle.

He even offered to dispose of the broken one.

The missionaries thanked him and continued their journey.

“Go to the Police Station”

Eventually they reached the city where the two missing members lived.

But they still had no idea how to find them.

Once again, the speaker knelt and prayed.

He told God that they had done everything they knew how to do and could not succeed without help.

He asked where to go.

He says the answer came:

“Go to the police station and ask for help.”

When he opened his eyes, there was a police station across the highway.

He entered and eventually approached an officer.

The officer refused to help him.

For a moment, the experience seemed like a failure.

Then someone tapped him on the shoulder.

A Stranger Knew the Missing Members

A man standing behind him in line had overheard the conversation.

The man offered to help.

The missionary gave him the name of the woman they were trying to locate.

The stranger said he knew her.

He called her and handed the phone to the missionary.

Within moments, the missionaries had her address and phone number, and she agreed to meet them.

The speaker then asked about the second missing member.

The stranger believed he could help with him too.

Through another connection, he located the second person as well.

Both agreed to reconnect with the Church.

Why These Miracles Became Evidence of God for Him

The speaker is careful to acknowledge that he does not understand everything about the gospel.

He has questions.

He has doubts.

But these missionary experiences belong to a different category for him because he believes he personally experienced them.

He says:

“I may not understand everything about the gospel, but I understand that God lives and God is a God of miracles.”

The point is not that every theological or historical question has been resolved.

The point is that unanswered questions do not erase what he believes he already knows through direct personal experience.

God Knows People Who Feel Lost

These missionary stories carry another important message.

The people he was prompted to find were not famous.

They were simply names on a membership list.

One had apparently been disconnected from the Church for decades.

Yet the speaker believes God knew exactly where those individuals were.

This leads to a powerful faith-centered principle:

Someone can be lost to a ward directory without ever being lost to God.

Addresses change.

Phone numbers disappear.

Years pass.

People drift away.

But Heavenly Father still knows His children.

Can Someone Sin Too Much for Jesus Christ to Love Them?

The message then shifts from evidence of God’s existence to evidence of Christ’s love and the reach of His Atonement.

The speaker introduces this theme through his career as a criminal defense attorney.

One night, as a young attorney, he was asked to represent a man who had been arrested for murder and multiple carjackings.

There was no serious question about the man’s guilt.

He had killed another person during a robbery and committed additional crimes while attempting to escape.

The attorney went to the jail to meet him.

As he passed through locked doors and entered the small interview room, he wrestled with the reality that he was about to sit across from someone who had taken a human life.

Then the prisoner entered.

And the speaker says he immediately felt one of the strongest spiritual impressions of his life:

Jesus Christ loved this man.

God Can Love a Person Without Approving of Their Sin

This experience profoundly affected him because it separated two ideas that people sometimes confuse.

A person’s actions can be terribly wrong while that person still has eternal worth as a child of God.

The speaker does not minimize the crime.

He does not suggest earthly consequences should disappear.

The man would spend many years incarcerated.

But the speaker felt that God still cared about his life and his soul.

Over the course of his legal career, he says he experienced similar impressions toward other clients guilty of serious wrongdoing.

He remembers feeling God’s love for people caught in abuse, addiction, desperation, crime, and deep personal brokenness.

His conclusion is:

No person is worthless, and no person is beyond the reach of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Are My Sins Too Bad for God to Forgive Me?

The speaker then speaks directly to anyone who believes they have gone too far.

If you think your sins are too terrible, your mistakes too serious, or your life too broken for God to love or forgive you, he argues that you do not fully understand God.

God’s mercy is not based on ignorance.

God understands the full reality of human wickedness.

He has seen every form of violence, cruelty, betrayal, and sin.

And knowing all of that, He still sent Jesus Christ.

The speaker cites the Lord’s promise that when a person truly repents, the Lord forgives and remembers the sin no more.

He also points to Isaiah’s promise:

“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

The message is not that sin is unimportant.

The message is that the Savior’s power to redeem is greater than our ability to fall.

Jesus Christ Loves People We May Struggle to Love

The speaker’s experience as a criminal defense attorney gave him a perspective on Christ’s love that he had not expected.

He spent time with people whom society often sees only through the worst thing they have done.

But he says God repeatedly helped him see something more.

He saw children of God.

He saw people still capable of repentance.

He saw people whose lives still mattered to Christ.

This becomes one of the most powerful parts of his testimony.

Jesus Christ is not merely the Savior of people who have made small mistakes.

He came to save sinners.

How Can You Gain Your Own Testimony of God?

The final section becomes personal in another way.

The speaker explains that his testimony did not begin with dramatic miracles in Japan or powerful experiences as an attorney.

He grew up in a faithful home with parents who taught him the gospel.

But eventually he reached a point where his parents’ testimony was not enough.

He realized they were not infallible.

They could sincerely believe something and still potentially be mistaken.

He needed to know for himself.

Moroni’s Promise and Personal Revelation

Fortunately, he had been taught the promise found in the final chapter of the Book of Mormon.

Moroni invites readers to ask God whether the Book of Mormon is true:

With a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ.

The promise is that God will manifest the truth through the power of the Holy Ghost.

The speaker decided to test the promise.

He knelt and prayed night after night.

He asked whether God was there.

He asked whether the gospel his parents had taught him was actually true.

Curiosity Had to Become Real Intent

At first, he says his motivation was mostly curiosity.

He wanted an answer, but he had not yet fully decided what he would do with that answer.

Over time, curiosity became a sincere desire to know.

Eventually he reached the point where he knew he would commit his life to whatever answer God gave him.

That change became crucial.

For him, real intent meant being willing to act.

When God Answered His Prayer

Once his heart became sincere and his intent became real, he says God answered his prayer exactly as Moroni’s promise had described.

He received a personal spiritual witness through the Holy Ghost.

When he stood up from prayer, he knew that God lived and believed the scriptures were true.

That experience became foundational to his life.

Today, he teaches the scriptures to his own sons.

But he does not simply tell them to rely on his testimony.

He invites them to pray and learn for themselves.

Inherited Faith Must Eventually Become Personal Faith

This is one of the most important lessons in the talk.

Parents can teach.

Missionaries can testify.

Prophets can testify.

Scripture can testify.

But eventually each person must decide what they will do with those witnesses.

The speaker’s own journey followed this pattern:

  • His parents taught him.
  • He questioned.
  • He prayed.
  • He received his own spiritual witness.
  • He now teaches his children to seek their own witness.

Faith becomes strongest when it moves from something inherited to something personally experienced.

Faith Does Not Require Having Every Answer

Another important theme runs throughout the message.

The speaker never claims to understand everything about the gospel.

He openly says there are things he does not understand.

He has doubts and concerns like other people.

But his approach is not:

“I understand everything, therefore I believe.”

His approach is closer to:

“I do not understand everything, but I have experienced enough that I cannot honestly deny what I have witnessed.”

This allows room for both faith and unanswered questions.

The Holy Ghost Can Turn Believers Into Witnesses

The speaker’s final invitation is not simply to listen to his testimony.

He wants listeners to become witnesses themselves.

The pattern is:

  • Hear the witnesses.
  • Study and investigate.
  • Ask God.
  • Exercise sincere faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Receive a personal witness through the Holy Ghost.
  • Stand as a witness to others.

This gives deeper meaning to the baptismal covenant to stand as witnesses of God.

A witness is not merely someone who repeats another person’s belief.

A spiritual witness is someone who has come to know something personally and then faithfully testifies of it.

Final Takeaway: God Lives, Jesus Christ Saves, and You Can Know for Yourself

The deepest message of this video is that faith in God does not have to mean believing without any evidence.

The speaker sees evidence in historical witnesses.

He sees evidence in the testimony of the Book of Mormon witnesses.

He sees evidence in prophets and apostles.

He sees evidence in miracles and answered prayers.

Most importantly, he sees evidence in the experiences God has given him personally.

His missionary experiences convinced him that God knows His children individually.

His legal career convinced him that Jesus Christ loves people even when they have committed terrible sins.

His personal prayers convinced him that the Holy Ghost can reveal truth directly to an individual.

His conclusion is therefore simple:

God lives. Jesus Christ is the Savior. The scriptures are true. The witnesses are many.

But the invitation does not end with believing his testimony.

It ends with the same invitation Moroni gives:

Ask for yourself.

Seek God with a sincere heart.

Have real intent.

Exercise faith in Jesus Christ.

And allow the Holy Ghost to give you your own witness of the truth.

The ultimate goal is not merely to hear evidence that God lives.

It is to become a witness yourself.
